How to make captions people actually read

Plenty of people watch on mute

On phones, short videos often play without sound. Captions keep those viewers following along instead of scrolling past.

A few words at a time

Two to four words on screen are easier to follow than a whole sentence. The caption styles show a short phrase and light up the word being said.

Keep them clear of the buttons

TikTok, Reels and Shorts put their buttons and text along the bottom and the right edge. Captions in the middle of the frame never end up underneath them.

Burned in or a file

Burned-in captions show everywhere the video goes, which is what Shorts and TikTok need. For YouTube long videos, a subtitle file lets viewers turn them off: Video to Text makes the .srt.

Clean audio, clean captions

Background music and people talking over each other cause most wrong words. If you can, caption the version with the voice loudest.
