How YouTube earnings work

RPM, not CPM

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad views. RPM is what the creator keeps per 1,000 video views after YouTube’s share. RPM is the number that tells you what a channel earns.

Niche changes everything

Advertisers pay more to reach people deciding about money, software or business. That is why finance channels earn several times more per view than gaming or kids’ channels.

Shorts pay much less per view

Shorts are paid from a shared pool, typically a few cents per 1,000 views. They are best for growth; long videos are where the money is.

You need the Partner Program

Ads pay only after joining the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in a year, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.

Season and audience move RPM

RPM is highest before Christmas and lowest in January, and viewers in the US, UK and Canada earn more per view than most other countries.
