What a good hook does
It opens a loop
A good hook makes the viewer need the next sentence: a strange fact, a stake, or a situation that cannot be left unexplained.
It skips the introduction
"In this video" and "Hey guys" waste the only two seconds you have. Start with the most interesting thing.
It is short
Under 20 words, read in about two seconds. If it needs a comma and a second clause, it is probably two hooks.
The video keeps the promise
A hook the video does not pay off gets the swipe a few seconds later instead. That hurts the video more than a quieter opening.
